SEO is a tool used to help drive traffic to a website. Traffic equates to advertising for our purposes.
According to Wikipedia:
"Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search,[1] news search and industry-specific vertical search engines."
We want to look at getting your web pages on the first or second page of results for your selected "Key Words".
Key words are those words or phrases that identify the content on a page. Usually this is the specific topic or title of that page.
When someone enters your key words into a search engine like "Google", you want to be one of those listings that are returned right up front. In this way, you can be assured that your pages will (at the very least) have a chance of being looked at. This is called "Traffic".
As in all advertising, you want as much qualified traffic as possible seeing your web page.
The process of "Optimizing" a web page for these results often requires modifying the content slightly on the page in question.
The rules that the search engines apply when they are determining which pages to display where, varies by the search engine, but for the most part follow a common pattern. And, it is this pattern that we want to be able to present to those search engines without detracting from delivering our message to our intended audience.
For instance, the key words need to be in the title of the page. They must be written in the text on the page at least once, but, preferrably, at least twice.
There are a number of other steps that are necessary as well. In all cases, getting position results takes time. It also requires monitoring results and modifying the content as needed to improve the position of them.
